Zero-Click Search Is Here. But Is SEO Really Dead?
AI Overviews Are Taking Over Google. Don’t Panic.

AI search has marketers in full existential crisis mode. Google’s AI Overviews are changing how people search and driving fears that SEO is no longer relevant in terms of user search.
But let’s be clear:
- SEO is not dead.
- Organic traffic is not dying.
- It’s just changing.
This week’s newsletter will help you understand what’s happening and what to do next.
What Is Zero-Click Search (ZCS)?
Zero-click search allows users to find answers to their queries directly on the search results page without needing to click through additional web pages. Google provides these answers through various formats:
AI Overviews (AIOs): Generative AI summaries that pull from multiple sources.
Snippets, Knowledge Boxes, FAQs: Familiar features now powered up by AI.
ZCS is growing and evolving, especially for informational queries. For example, “how to descale a Keurig” may get a full walkthrough in the SERP. No need to visit a site.
But if someone searches with commercial intent (“Keurig K-Elite best price”), AI Overviews usually don’t appear. Google still reserves the top spots for websites, reviews, product listings, and ads.
So, while ZCS is shifting how people search, it doesn’t mean high-intent traffic is gone. It just means you need to adapt.
Why Marketers Are Panicking
Stories of traffic drops are everywhere, especially after recent Google updates.
Take Hubspot.
They saw a significant decline in organic traffic. Some blamed AI Overviews. But the truth is more complex. Core updates, diluted topical authority, or even internal strategy shifts could all be factors.
Rand Fishkin’s recent SparkToro study added fuel to the fire, showing that:
~60% of Google searches now end without a click.
That sounds dire. But remember, zero-click user behaviors existed before AIOs. People have always found quick answers from featured snippets or maps.
The bigger shift? AI is better at answering those queries lightning-fast.
So, Is SEO Dead?
No. But the game has changed. Here’s what you need to know:
✅ What Still Works (and Matters More Than Ever):
Know your audience: Create content that educates them to make informed choices in solving their real problems.
Match search intent: Write for how people ask questions, not just keywords.
Stick to your lane: Build topical authority on tightly focused themes.
Publish real expertise: Showcase firsthand experience and insight.
Structure your site: Use schema, FAQs, and proper formatting to help machines parse your content.
Stay technically strong: Fast-loading site pages, clean code, and great UX still counts.
These fundamentals still drive results. But there’s one ranking factor that matters more now than ever...
You Gotta E-E-A-T More
AI Overviews don’t just pull any content—they pull the most credible content.
To get cited in AIOs, your site needs to demonstrate:
Experience: Real-world, firsthand knowledge.
Expertise: Deep, accurate understanding of the topic.
Authoritativeness: Links, mentions, and recognition in your field.
Trustworthiness: Clear sources, transparent content, secure pages.
If you’re not meeting these standards, AI will skip your content, making your brand disappear from visibility, even if your content is a solid resource.
The Metrics That Matter Are Changing
You may not get the same traffic volume from informational queries as before. But the traffic you do get? It’s likely more qualified.
Your new SEO scoreboard should focus on:
Conversions, not clicks
Lead quality, not raw traffic
Engagement, not vanity metrics
Measure whether visitors fill out forms, make purchases, or stay on your site—not just whether they showed up.
AI is filtering out low-intent users. So your site should double down on:
Strong CTAs
CRO best practices
Landing pages built to convert
So, What Should You Do Now?
Here’s your SEO action plan for the age of zero-click search:
1. Focus on content depth and clarity:
Write with AI (and real people) in mind. Cover topics thoroughly and accurately.
2. Build authority in a niche:
Avoid diluting your site. Stay focused. Build topical clusters around key themes.
3. Optimize for featured snippets and structured data:
Use schema markup to help AI summarize and cite your content.
4. Prioritize E-E-A-T in every post:
Cite sources. Include expert bios. Use author pages. Create trust.
5. Adjust your KPIs:
Track revenue-generating actions. Traffic is still a signal, but not the only one.
6. Adapt your expectations:
SEO today isn’t about volume. It’s about value. Think quality over quantity.
Final Thoughts
Zero-click search is not the end of SEO. It’s a call to evolve.
AIOs will filter low-intent traffic out of your funnel, but that’s not all bad.
If you create credible, buyer-intent-driven content, your best users will still find you.
And when they do, your job is to turn those clicks into customers.
Let the LinkedIn doomsayers freak out. You’re building smarter, better, and more resilient SEO—one click at a time.
