📍 Thursday Marketing Mix

Hey marketers,

Ranking on Google isn’t enough anymore. These days, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini are scanning your site to generate direct answers. But they don’t scan like a bot—they read like a human.

If your content isn’t structured clearly, it won’t get cited or summarized by AI. In today’s newsletter, I’ll show you how to format your site to win in this new AI-powered search environment.

Let’s jump in.

🚹 AI Search Is About Representation, Not Just Ranking

Traditional SEO focuses on metadata, links, and structured data. AI search shifts that.

LLMs don’t crawl—they ingest content and parse meaning based on:

  • Sentence order

  • Heading hierarchy

  • Formatting (lists, tables, FAQs)

  • Clear definitions and semantic cues

If your content looks like a wall of text—or hides its value deep down the page—it won’t cut.

📐 How To Structure Content So LLMs Understand It

Here’s your checklist for creating AI-friendly pages that get quoted, not skipped:

  1. Use a Clear Heading Hierarchy
Make sure H1s, H2s, and H3s nest logically. Refrain from duplicating H1s. Structure equals clarity.

  2. Keep Paragraphs Short and Specific
One idea per paragraph. Clarity helps LLMs extract value.

  3. Frontload Key Takeaways
Don’t bury the hook. State your answer or insight early.

  4. Use Semantic Cues
Words like “Step 1,” “In summary,” “Best practice,” or “Most common mistake” help models flag relevance.

  5. Format for Quick Parsing
Use bullet points, comparison tables, FAQs, and numbered lists. These are LLM goldmines.

  6. Avoid Clutter
Popups, carousels, or disjointed CTAs? They pollute what AI sees in the page code.

🔍 Yes, Keywords Still Matter—Even for AI

Wondering if LLMs could be “smarter” than keyword matching? Sort of.

But their retrieval systems are still literal. If your post doesn’t include the exact phrasing users type (like “LLM” or “AI-powered search”), it won’t show—even if the content is relevant.

Use precise, natural language in your titles, slugs, and intros.

📊 AI Visibility = Clear Communication, Not Just Tags

Schema markup still helps—but it’s not a crutch. If your content isn’t well-structured and readable, AI won’t bring it up on search.

Google’s own Gemini model does use structured data for clarity. But that only works if your base content is already strong.

đŸ§© Takeaway: Write for Retrieval, Not Just Readers

AI won’t rank your page if it can’t understand it. That means:

  • Be literal with your terminology

  • Use structured formats like lists and FAQs

  • Present ideas clearly, upfront, and in order

If your content reads well aloud, it probably works for AI, too.
