As the largest search engine in the world, Google upholds a high standard when it comes to the content it provides when a user searches for something. Websites with bad or unoptimized UX won’t provide a great user experience, so why would Google want to suggest it to its users?Thus, the importance of seamless UX can not be underestimated. When creating your content and website, make sure to pay attention to your site’s UX design and functionality.So, what SEO metrics should you look at when trying to gauge the effectiveness of your UX?

  • Bounce Rate: Assess the percentage of visitors who leave your website after viewing just one page, indicating user engagement.

  • Dwell Time: Measure the time users spend on your site after clicking on a search result, reflecting content quality.

  • Mobile Performance: With mobile-first indexing, monitor how well your site functions on mobile devices.

Why High Bounce Rates are a Red Flag

Bounce rates represent the percentage of visitors who navigate away from your site after viewing only one page. While not inherently bad, excessively high bounce rates can negatively affect your site's search engine optimization (SEO) performance.From a search engine’s perspective, search engines aim to deliver the best results for user queries.High bounce rates suggest that your site might not be meeting user expectations, prompting search engines to reevaluate its relevance. High bounce rates often suggest that visitors didn't find what they were seeking. This can send a signal to search engines that your content isn't relevant or valuable, potentially affecting your rankings.When gauging your site’s bounce rate, 40% or lower is considered good, and anything over 55% needs optimization.

Bounce rates and dwell time are already important ranking factors, but with the age of AI already in full swing, search engines will need to redefine how content is assessed and ranked. Google’s most recent updates have already shown a glimpse of what that looks like.With a higher focus on user intent and helpfulness, it’s clear that certain metrics such as a page’s bounce rate and dwell time will be key factors when considering which page gets a top ranking. The reason is simple. Helpful content will for the most part have a much lower bounce rate than content that isn’t.But there’s more.Even if you’re content is well-written and helpful, bad UX could result in users quickly quitting your page to find another. A simple example is page loading time. One in every four users will quit a page if it takes longer than four seconds to load. This will quickly affect your page’s bounce rate, as 25% of users will bounce off before the page even loads completely.

(Source)Optimizing your website for mobile devices is also essential to keep your bounce rate low and dwell time high. On average, 55% of a site’s traffic will be from a mobile device.Here’s my audience’s device usage for the past 28 days:

As you can see, my site has an equal split between desktop and mobile, with a very small fraction using tablets.If your site’s not optimized for mobile use, you could be losing out on half of your possible audience, and hurt your dwell time and bounce rate.

It’s all about the clicks.

Other metrics you should take note of are click-through rates, dead clicks, rage clicks, and even how a user scrolls through your page.

Using software such as Hotjar or OptinMonster, you can analyze areas of your page where users are clicking a lot, where they spend most of their on-page time, as well as identify areas of a page that users aren’t interested in.

This will help you optimize your website for greater user engagement and identify problem areas that might be resulting in users bouncing off the page early.

Designing your site with user retention in mind is an important part of an SEO strategy, especially as AI content becomes increasingly popular.
