What Are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are an experimental feature that summarizes information directly in search results. Instead of listing traditional blue links, this tool synthesizes data from various sources into a cohesive answer, allowing users to get detailed responses without needing to click through to websites.

In an example I came across, the AI Overview showed three related articles next to it as well. Interestingly, one was a top-ranking result, another was in the top 10, and the third wasn't on the first page. This demonstrates that AI Overviews don’t exclusively rely on top search results, broadening the range of content they pull from and making it important to get a spot on them.

How Will AI Overviews Affect SEO?

The AI Overview feature has the potential to drastically reduce click-through rates (CTR), especially if the AI-generated content fully satisfies user intent. Many publishers believe that this could cannibalize their organic traffic, as users may no longer need to visit their pages for information.

Fear of Google AI Overviews: What’s Behind It?

Another of the biggest concerns surrounding AI Overviews is the fear that Google could monopolize traffic. Content creators, particularly in the news industry, have raised concerns about how Google could effectively "repackage" their information without providing proper attribution or clicks back to the original site. Some experts fear a loss of control over how their content is used, worried that AI will pull pieces of information in ways that don’t fully reflect the context or quality of the source. There’s also the challenge of misinformation, as Google’s AI could inadvertently pull and combine data from untrustworthy sources.Publishers are urging for more transparency and citations, which would help provide proper credit and allow readers to verify the source of the AI-generated content.

How to Optimize Your Website for Google AI Overviews

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Optimizing for AI Overviews requires a shift in your approach to content creation:1. Focus on Broader, Comprehensive TopicsAI tends to favor content that covers broad topics comprehensively. Make sure your articles address various aspects of a subject and answer potential questions a user may have.

2. Use Structured Data Adding schema markup to your site helps Google’s AI better understand and organize your content. Structured data can increase your chances of being featured in Overviews by making it easier for Google to extract relevant information.3. Prioritize E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) High-quality, authoritative content is more likely to be chosen for Overviews. Establish credibility through clear author attribution, expert knowledge, and trustworthiness signals like reviews or social proof.4. Update and Refresh ContentAI Overviews are dynamic and may favor recently updated or frequently refreshed content. Keeping your pages up-to-date will increase your chances of being selected for AI summaries.

Shane’s Tips to Optimize for AI Overviews

1. Create In-Depth ArticlesGoogle’s AI favors comprehensive content. Don’t just answer a query, dive deep into the topic to provide additional value. This increases your chances of being used as a reliable source.Tools such as Surfer SEO can help create SEO-friendly, in-depth content by helping you identify relevant topics and keywords regarding your main topic. It can provide outlines for articles, which can help you craft articles that rank.

2. Use FAQ SectionsAI often pulls from FAQ-style content. Including a well-structured FAQ section in your articles can make it easier for AI to extract valuable insights. The best way to do this is to find relevant keywords regarding your main keyword/topic and turn them into questions. Tools such as Semrush and SE Ranking even have dedicated sections for possible questions that are ranking for a keyword such as the example below.

3. Build High-Quality Backlinks Google considers trust and authority when pulling content for AI Overviews. Boost your site’s authority by earning backlinks from reputable sources.
